When Rodney Smith, Jr., a student at Alabama A&M University, isn’t attending class or studying, he offers complementary lawn service to those who lack the time and resources to do so. He also strives to provide valuable lessons to people about community service.

Smith started in 2015, utilizing his free time to tend to the lawns of those who struggle to maintain their yard such as single mothers, the elderly and the disabled. He has since grown the complementary service into an organization called “Raising Men Lawn Care Service.”

Smith created a GoFundMe page to help accrue much needed donations for expenses and to help spread the word about his cause. He explains, “The union of an ordinary yard maintenance service and the commitment to establish an inspiring program to keep our young men and boys (young women and girls) on a positive path while learning and understanding their value in society. This has been my vision since I started with the first yard. All the lawns we do are done for FREE.”

He added, “I want to show our children (our future) that by helping others they too will receive a sense of accomplishment, self-esteem, moral value and purpose in themselves. The message I want to instill is no matter how young or old, small or tall they are or cultural background they come from, they are capable of whatever they put their mind to.”
