Sarah was born without the hairs in her inner ears, therefore preventing her from hearing.

Sarah’s mother-in-law Lari decided to pay for a procedure that was now available to help Sarah hear. The procedure, however, cost $30,000 per ear and would not be covered by insurance. Lari decided to cash in her retirement fund and pay the $30,000 for a procedure to be done on one of her ears.

The procedure allowed Sarah to hear things she’d never heard before like her two young children giggling, the birds chirping, rain, thunder, and of course her husband snoring as some of the first things that stuck out in her mind.

Just eight days after the procedure, she and her husband and mother-in-law were invited as guests on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show after Ellen heard of Sarah’s struggle and the selfless act of her mother-in-law. Little did they know, Sarah was surprised with the opportunity to receive the procedure on her other ear along with $30,000 to repay her mother-in-law to replenish her retirement fund.
