North Carolina Panther’s quarterback Cam Newton surprised 10-year-old Elijah Aschbrenner for a spooktacular Halloween treat. Elijah, who has a rare form of cancer called epithelioid sarcoma, celebrated his favorite holiday early with the help of neighbors after hearing some devastating news that the cancer had spread.

To make sure Elijah was able to participate in his favorite holiday, neighbors and residents rallied together as a community throwing a Halloween block party bash. Elijah had received a phone call a few days prior from the qb in an attempt lift his spirits, but was never expecting Newton to show up to the event itself.

Newton along with teammate Colin Cole surprised residents and kids at the block party. Elijah’s mother, Becky Hughes, was especially grateful for Newton’s appearance. She told TODAY, “I just lost it, knowing he was a busy guy but he took time out on a Friday night to come and see Elijah? I started crying, and he was like, ‘Dry it up, Momma!'” she quipped. She recalled Newton made sure to get some special one-on-one time with her son, even though all the kids were clamoring for his attention.

Newton brought along an ice cream truck and 22 boxes of Elijah’s favorite dessert, brownies from Papa John’s Pizza. He also brought dinner for the neighborhood, steak, shrimp, mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese.

“It was an absolutely magical night,” Hughes told TODAY. “It was emotional to see everyone come together for Elijah, just knowing how much he loves Halloween. It was one of those nights that none of us will ever forget, and it meant the world to us.”
