Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has had quite the week. First, he became a new dad when he and his wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan welcomed a baby girl named Max. Then came another huge announcement. He and his wife vow to give away 99% of their shares over their lifetime, currently valued at $45 billion, to charity.

The announcement came via Facebook post in which he and Priscilla share a letter entitled “A letter to our daughter.” In part, the letter states, “We are committed to doing our small part to help create this world for all children. We will give 99% of our Facebook shares — currently about $45 billion — during our lives to join many others in improving this world for the next generation.”

They add, “Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today. While headlines often focus on what’s wrong, in many ways the world is getting better. Health is improving. Poverty is shrinking. Knowledge is growing. People are connecting. Technological progress in every field means your life should be dramatically better than ours today. We will do our part to make this happen, not only because we love you, but also because we have a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation.”

The new parents announced that the money being donated will be managed by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, its mission to “join people across the world to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation.” They state they will initially focus on “personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities.”
