Jonathan Mendes, at 94-years-old, became the oldest person to ever participate in the New York City marathon. After promising family members that last year he had competed in his final marathon, he changed his mind and began training for the famous NYC marathon.

The ex-marine began training and preparing for the marathon, prepping to complete the long trek the week of his 95th birthday.

The former smoker told USA Today he eats a big breakfast, a moderate lunch and a big dinner. He eats lots of fish, vegetables and fruits. He used to run regularly in nearby Central Park until his doctor told him his joints were taking a beating. Now, he walks two miles before breakfast and about two miles after. Twice a week, he works with a personal trainer at the gym in his building, he told the news outlet.

Mendes, who sports a “Go Jon!” t-shirt in the video below chuckled to the camera when asked if this was in fact his final marathon. “Absolutely, this is my last marathon…however, don’t quote me on that.”
