Pok-nam Shin and her younger half-sister Eun-sook grew up in separate orphanages in South Korea before being adopted by two different American families. Pok-nam, now Holly Hoyle O’Brien, was adopted at age 9 and moved with her new family to Alexandria, Va. Eun-sook, now Meagan Hughes, was also adopted by an American family and relocated to Kingston, New York, only 300 miles from her sister.

One night, Holly awoke with the sudden urgency to find her younger sibling. She recalled to her parents, “My daddy died, I have a sister, we need to find her.”

Since the two sisters grew up in different orphanages, there was no linking of the two. Holly tried to contact the orphanage several years later, but received the same answer. Holly didn’t lose faith after years began to pass. “In my heart, I knew … she was out there somewhere,” O’Brien, now 46, told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

In a crazy twist of fate, the two sisters unknowingly were reunited when they both were hired at the same hospital in Sarasota, Fl. Not only were the girls hired at the same hospital, they were both assigned to the fourth floor and worked the same 12-hour shift.

“I was like, this is too good to be true. I said we’ve got to do the DNA test, it’s the only way we’ll get the truth out of the whole thing,” Holly recalled to the Sarasota Hearld Tribune.

Holly received the news via email, then followed it up with a verbal confirmation because what was revealed was incredible. A positive match! After Meagan heard the amazing news, she said, “I was in shock, I was numb. I have a sister.”
