Debby Elnatan invented a device to help paralyzed children stand upright and give them the ability to walk with a harness that straps onto an adult. The invention, called the Firefly Upsee, uses straps that connect onto the adult and child that enables the child to get the sensation of walking.

Elnatan got the inspiration to create such a device through her son, Rotem, who has cerebral palsy. The straps enable a child with special needs to take steps alongside the adult, while keeping them upright.

Elnatan explained after receiving heartbreaking news from medical professionals claiming that Rotem, “didn’t know what his legs are and has no consciousness of them,” she decided to do what she could. She told DailyMail, “I started to walk him day after day, which was a very strenuous task for both of us. Out of my pain and desperation came the idea for the Upsee and I’m delighted to see it come to fruition.”

The company’s clinical research manager and occupational therapist, Clare Canale, spoke about the impact Upsee has on families. “Short-term, the Upsee improves special needs family participation and quality of life, while research suggests it has the potential to help with physical and emotional development in the longer term.” She added, “It has been humbling to see the progress and happiness the Upsee is creating; watching children to do simple things for the first time such as kicking a ball or playing with a sibling is wonderful for everyone involved, but especially the families.”

The Firefly Upsee is now sold globally helping children and families world-wide.
