Teen Receives Diploma Early So Terminally Ill Father Can Watch Her Graduate

Lakota West High School is bending the rules for a good reason, allowing senior Stevee Candrl to receive her diploma four months early so that her terminally ill father could witness her major milestone.

Stevee’s father, Mike Candrl, beat prostate cancer in 2013, but the cancer returned to his bile duct, his most recent diagnosis giving him months to live. In fear that Mike would not make Stevee’s graduation in May, her mother and sister came up with the idea to throw an early graduation ceremony and party so that Mike could partake in the celebration.

In an interview with PEOPLE magazine, Stevee explained, “My mom emailed my principal and teachers and they took the ball and ran with it. Since all of my siblings are older and 4 out of 5 are married, it was really special for me to have him there for at least one life milestone as he’s going to miss so many other ones of mine.”

The graduation ceremony came as a complete surprise to Mike. Family members led him to believe he would be attending an awards ceremony.

Stevee was presented with a promissory diploma and a graduation cake courtesy of the school.

“To be able to have that day with him there meant the world to me,” she told PEOPLE. “It made the thought of me going through life without him a little more bearable since he had at least seen me graduate. I cannot thank everyone enough who made it possible.”
