Meathead Moving Company offers free moves victims of domestic violence. These good samaritans offer their help to women – or men- that need to vacate an abusive home.

The company, based out of California, understands that leaving an abusive home can be an emotionally daunting task, not to mention financially difficult. Often times, the victim finds an opportunity to leave a situation and needs help right away.

The idea of offering a free moving service to those in need came about when the company would receive the occasional frantic phone call from a victim of domestic abuse, asking if they could help. The movers would show up and offer up their services, but at times the situation would get risky.

The owners, Aaron and Evan Steed, recalled one time in 2000 that an abuser showed up mid-move and things escalated. Consequently, the owners partnered with a local women’s shelter that would offer up their services as well when the phone calls came in. “What was good about that is, they could be vetting the requests for help, supporting the women with counseling, and making sure when we went in, the proper restraining orders were in place, or police were on hand if necessary,” said Aaron Steed.

Since the company’s inception in 1997, Meathead Moving Company have helped hundreds of victims leave abusive homes at zero cost.

Aaron added, “It’s the special service we like to offer. These moves became very personal to us, made all the employees so proud, and became part of our mission statement.”

The company’s goal is to inspire other companies to offer up their services to help in cases of domestic violence. They have initiated the campaign #MoveToEndDV to do just that. “Some of our ideas are for businesses to offer free security systems, a dog kennel service, or for an auto-mechanic to provide oil changes. All those little things would help differ costs of starting over.”
